Breast Implants Surgery: Emotional Preparation

prpare for surgery and relaxBreast augmentation surgery is not just a physical event, it is a very emotional experience that will have a great impact on you, both positively and negatively.  Many aspects of surgery affect your emotions. It is not uncommon to become depressed for a time after surgery. You may start questioning your choices, your appearance, and yourself. We’ll cover these feelings of insecurity and disappointment in the Recovery: What to Expect.

If you are not prepared for the emotional upheaval that can come with getting breast implants, you may be more prone to depression and shock. Take time to organize, gather, and understand your emotions and thoughts before your surgery. Anesthesia and medications can have a large effect on your outlook, and being prepared for this helps. Being in a relaxed frame of mind can decrease your recovery time and help things progress more easily.

It is very natural to have preoperative jitters, but try to relax. If you trust the surgeon performing your surgery and let him or her do his job, everything will go along more smoothly. Getting worked up about your breast implants surgery to a point of being anxious and frightened can actually interfere with the healing process during your  recovery after breast augmentation. Just know that it is normal to be excited and to have that adrenaline rush from knowing you will have the breasts you’ve always wanted very soon!

Stay Relaxed During Breast Implants Preparation

Here are some ways to help keep your mind at ease on your way into surgery and postoperatively. These are some of the things I did before surgery to help me keep things into perspective.

Make sure your surgeon is aware of your wishes

Make sure all of your shopping (from foods to bandages) is complete

Have all of your medications in order or prepare a place for them along with your medication time chart

Talk about any concerns over with your spouse or family and remind them why you want the surgery

Compare old photographs and go over either on paper or in your head why you really want the surgery yourself.

Take a nice bath or hot shower the night before your surgery and wash your hair. You might even want to light some candles and soak for a bit. However, make sure to rinse off with antibacterial soap afterwards and be sure there are no oils, creams, or perfumes on your body. Soaking in a nice tub is therapeutic beforehand as long as you are clean as a whistle when you get out. You might even play some relaxing music while in the tub.

If you wish, get massage a few days before your breast augmentation surgery to help you relax.

Keep telling yourself that, during the healing phase, you will be:

  • bruised
  • sore
  • swollen
  • asymmetrical
  • tired
  • irritable
  • unsure
  • possibly depressed

Print out our "motivational" Postoperative Emotions Reminder List to help you remember these things.

If you know and understand that you will have some emotional changes as you go through surgery and healing, there will be no surprises. Print this material out before surgery because even though you know in your mind now that you will feel this way, you will forget. Know this.

Do whatever it is that helps you relax, both before and after your surgery.

Talk to your friends about your decision to have breast augmentation, if you want to let them know. However, if you hide it and they notice your changed body later, they may be hurt or angry. But remember, if you don't want them to know, that is your prerogative.

Remember that this doesn't have to be a stressful time. Stressing and worrying doesn't make anything better once you've have made your choice and intend to have your surgery. Stress can increase healing time and can cause your blood pressure to rise. Think of how you will look in the following weeks after surgery!
