Surgery Day Instructions List

Be sure to arrive at the hospital or surgery center on time. You should have the arrival time in your information packet or confirm it the day before.  If you don’t know where you are going, get a map and complete instructions. Make a practice run to the hospital or surgery center a few days before your breast augmentation surgery if you can. Allow a lot of extra time for traffic, bad weather, and getting lost. If you are late, the plastic surgeon may cancel your surgery and your surgery fee is nonrefundable.

  • Arrive at the hospital or surgery center, clean, with clean and dry hair and in clean clothes.  Be sure that you have thoroughly washed with antibacterial soap, if you have been instructed to, and have not applied any lotions, deodorants, talcum or baby powders, perfumes, make-up, or body spray.
  • Wear comfortable loose-fitting clothing, with tops that button or zip down the front. Do not wear anything you have to pull on over your head. Wear good slippers with a nonslip sole.
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the evening before your surgery. If your surgery is in the afternoon or evening, your surgeon will give you instructions on when to stop eating.
  • Leave all valuables at home. This includes rings, watches, earrings, or other jewelry. Do not bring large sums of money to the surgery center or hospital unless you are instructed to pay for the balance of your surgery fee. If any of these items become lost the hospital or surgeon is not responsible. Don’t bring anything you would not want to lose.
  • If you must take a medication the morning of surgery, take it with only a few sips of water.  Bring with you any instructed medications, including pain relievers.
  • In the days before your breast implants surgery, if you develop any fever, chills, a cough, or other signs of a cold or other infection, call your surgeon's office immediately. Yes, it is possible that your surgery will have to be postponed, but you should never have surgery if you already have some type of infection.
  • Bring with you your surgery bras, support and compression garments or bandages.
  • Bring your postoperative car kit and supplies such as pillows, bottled water, crackers, coffee can with lid, blanket, towel, etc. for the ride home. You can leave that in the car.
  • Don't forget your sunglasses. On the way home, the sun may hurt your eyes and can cause a headache, which is the last thing you need.
  • Bring your camera if you wish to document your experience with a photo right before your surgery and your immediate recovery.
