Supplements and Medications to Avoid Before Cosmetic Surgery

Many prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, vitamin and mineral supplements, and herbal products and remedies interfere with each other. You must tell your plastic surgeon and anesthesiologist of every medication or supplement you take daily or regularly and any you have taken in the last few months. Some medications, including some anti-depressants, take several weeks to completely leave the body.

Do not assume that if something is herbal or “natural,” that it is safe to take when you are having surgery or taking other medications. Even homeopathic supplements can increase some risks during and after your surgery, so please disclose every medication, essential oil, supplement, suspension, or what-have-you. Your life and wellbeing may depend upon it. This also goes for any recreational drug that you use even occasionally.

Almost everyone who undergoes elective surgery, such as breast augmentation, will be told not to take anything containing aspirin or ibuprofen for at least a week before cosmetic surgery. Some surgeons tell you not to take ibuprofen or aspirin for two weeks before surgery.

Aspirin and ibuprofen inhibits blood clotting and can cause problems with excessive bleeding during and after surgery. If you need to take a pain reliever in the days before your surgery, take acetaminophen (Tylenol). 

If you smoke, stop smoking at least 2 to 3 weeks before surgery and don’t start again until at least 2 to 3 weeks after your plastic surgery day. Smoking significantly reduces your body's circulation to the skin and interferes with healing. Stop smoking completely, if you can.

This is not a complete list of medications that can cause problems with surgery or anesthesia. Make sure your surgeon and your anesthesiologist have a complete list of all the medications you take. This list must include all over-the counter drugs you take frequently, as well as vitamin and mineral supplements and herbal supplements and preparations.
